9 Unique Christmas Markets in Germany
These Christmas markets are not your standard market but stand out for their unusual themes and/ or extraordinary settings.
1. Schloss Kaltenberg – A Christmas market like straight out of a fairytale
2026 Dates: Friday -Sunday, November 27 – December 20, 2026
Starting off with my personal favourite and one of the most unique Christmas markets in Germany. Schloss Kaltenberg in Bavaria is known for it’s knight tournaments in summer, but during Christmas season the castle transforms into a fairytale inspired by the Brothers Grimm.
The Christmas market features live actors, acrobats, shows, traditional Christmas market food & stalls.
It’s a truly special Christmas market in Germany, and I fell in love with it when I visited in 2025.
The Christmas market is only open on weekends during Advent and has become increasingly popular in recent years. So it does get pretty busy, but in my opinion it’s super worth it.
Make sure to purchase your tickets for this magical Christmas market online before your visit.

A handful of options are available in the nearest town, Geltendorf. Alternatively, you can stay along the nearby Lake Ammersee or in the city of Munich. Use the search here to find accommodation:

2. Esslingen am Neckar – The Medieval Christmas market in Germany
2026 Dates: November 24 – December 22
Another one of my favourite unique Christmas markets in Germany – the Medieval market in Esslingen am Neckar.
This town sits just a few kilometres outside Stuttgart and transports you back in time! The town’s timber-framed center is filled with medieval stalls, traditional food, jugglers and actors. There is a daily program at multiple stages, so make sure to plan at least a couple of hours here.
I especially recommend this Christmas market to people who love medieval vibes as well as families.
Esslingen is also one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany and always worth a visit.

3. Gengenbach – The world’s largest Advent calendar
2026 Dates: November 27 – December 23, 2026
During Advent, Gengenbach hosts a charming Christmas market and its town hall turns into the world’s largest house-sized Advent calendar. Every evening at 6 PM a new window is opened, revealing a piece of artwork.
This little town is also one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany – worth a visit year-round but especially during Christmas time. Stroll through the town center and get lost in the many cobblestone alleys with half-timbered houses.

4. Ravennaschlucht – One of the most unique Christmas markets in Germany
2026 Dates: November 26 – December 20, 2026 (Open Thursdays through Sundays only)
This is the only Christmas market on this list where I have not personally been yet, but it is too unique not to add it.
I am planning to finally visit this year, after not managing to buy tickets on time in the last few years (they sell out fast!).
What makes this Christmas market so unique is its stunning setting in the Ravenna Gorge directly beneath the illuminated 40-meter-high Ravenna Viaduct. The setting is truly special and something you need to see at least once in your life! Ticket sales start on October 14th this year, so make sure to buy your tickets ahead of time if you are planning to visit.

2026 Dates: November 26 – December 13, 2026 (Open Thursdays through Sundays)
Located in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, this town hosts a unique Christmas market surrounded by mountains.
The town is lit up with thousands of lights and hosts multiple events as well as a grand procession of over 140 fairytale figures, angels and winter spirits. The Christmas market in Bad Hindelang is often referred to as “the most beautiful Christmas market in the Allgäu region” and it’s easy to see why.
You can purchase tickets online before your visit, they are already available now. You can perfectly combine a visit to one of the most unique Christmas markets in Germany with a ski vacation in the region.

6. Burg Rheinstein – Fairytale Christmas market in a medieval fortress
2026 Dates: November 21 – December 20, 2026 (Open Saturdays and Sundays)
This is one of the most unique Christmas markets in Germany due to its stunning setting at Rheinstein Castle, perched on a massive rock overlooking the Rhine river.
During Christmas time the privately owned castle is decorated beautifully inside and out and on the weekends it hosts a small fairytale-like Christmas market.
I have personally visited during Christmas time but not on the weekend, so unfortunately the Christmas market itself was not open but the castle itself was very worth a visit as well.
Where to stay near Burg Rheinstein?
You can actually stay overnight at the castle directly, if you book your stay well in advance. More information and booking on their website.
Some other well-rated stays closeby are:

7. Lindau am Bodensee – Unique Christmas market on an island
2026 Dates: November 26 – December 20, 2026 (Open Thursdays through Sundays)
Lindau at Lake Constance is one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany. It’s located on an island with Alpine peaks in the distance.
This town and the lake itself are worth a visit year-round, but Christmas time is one of my favourite seasons to visit.
The Christmas market with its unique setting at the harbour is gorgeous, just imagine sipping on a cup of mulled wine while watching the boats drift past the iconic lion statue and lighthouse.

8. Waldkirch – Market with a singing Christmas tree
2026 Dates: 4 – 13 December, 2026
This tiny town near Freiburg is known for its historic tradition of mechanical organ building.
While the small Christmas market there is worth a visit by itself, the real reason why it’s on my list of most unique Christmas markets in Germany is that it hosts a singing Christmas tree.
Different choirs sing Christmas songs on top of a ten-meter-high Christmas tree construction. From traditional German Christmas songs to Jazz and Gospel. Definitely a very unique experience that I can 100% recommend.
Where to stay near Waldkirch?
As this is a very small town with not really any accommodation options, I recommend staying in Freiburg, which is only a few kilometres away and also super beautiful and worth a visit during Christmas time.
Well-rated mid-range to luxury stays in Freiburg:

9. Rüdesheim am Rhein – Christmas Market of Nations in the wine region
2026 Dates: November 23 – December 23, 2026
This picture-perfect town along the Rhine river feels like straight out of a storybook and is one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany.
I have visited twice so far, once in spring and once during Christmas time. I loved both visits but Christmas here is really special. Surrounded by vineyards and half-timbered houses, you can even take a cable car to a viewpoint here and take your cup of mulled wine with you!
The Christmas Market of Nations features vendors from over 15 countries across 6 continents. Stalls are filled with traditional crafts and holiday specialities.

Underrated Christmas markets in Germany
If you want to avoid tourist crowds while enjoying charming Christmas markets with authentic stalls, these might be worth a shot. Note that some of these also can get busy on weekends, but far from the crowds you get in major Christmas cities like Cologne or Dresden.
10. Nördlingen – A Romantic Christmas market along the Romantic Road
2026 Dates: November 27 – December 23, 2026
Nördlingen is one of my favourite storybook towns in Germany and is surrounded by the only completely intact medieval city wall in Germany.
Their Romantic Christmas market is amazing, filled with authentic stalls and traditional food. I spent the opening weekend here in 2025 and absolutely loved it. Make sure to head up to the Gothic church tower for the best views of the city and Christmas market.
Where to stay in Nördlingen?
Well-rated low budget to mid-range stays:
- Hey Lou Hotel
- 2nd Home Hotel (this is where I stayed and it was great!)
- Cafe-Hotel Altreuter

11. Trier – Christmas magic in Germany’s oldest city
2026 Dates: November 20 – December 22, 2026
Compared to other cities in Germany, the Christmas market in Trier is quite underrated and it’s setting truly stunning.
Trier is, as the oldest German city, home to many historic buildings with a unique Roman charme, which is also the reason it’s on my list of favourite fairytale towns in Germany.
At the Christmas market you can find everything your heart desires – local food, traditional goods and one of the most beautiful settings you can imagine. Sipping mulled wine with the view of the beautiful Trier Cathedral is definitely worth a spot on your bucket list!

12. Saarbrücken – Christmas market with a Flying Santa
2026 Dates: November 23 – December 23, 2026
Not far from Trier, you can find another one of my favourite underrated Christmas markets in Germany.
Saarbrücken combines a traditional German Christmas market with French culinary influences, due to its location close to the French border.
The real highlight here is the “Flying Santa Claus”, who sails above the historic market square in a reindeer sleigh twice every evening during Christmas time.

13. Dinkelsbühl – A hidden gem Christmas market along the Romantic Road
2026 Dates: November 26 – December 22, 2026
While most tourists storm to the neighbouring Rothenburg ob der Tauber during Christmas time, Dinkelsbühl offers a much less crowded and more authentic experience.
With its beautiful architecture and storybook vibes, it’s also one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany.
The Christmas market here is located inside the historic Spitalhof courtyard and very quiet and traditional. Also, make sure to check out the beautiful and massive nativity scene inside the St. Georg church.

Well-rated mid-range to luxury hotels:

14. Bernkastel-Kues – Christmas fairytale in the historic wine town
2026 Dates: November 20 – December 20, 2026
Bernkastel-Küs is located along the picturesque Moselle river and one of the most beautiful fairytale towns in all of Germany.
While it’s worth a visit year-round, I especially recommend Christmas time. The half-timbered town is decorated beautifully and the Christmas market is small and charming.
One highlight here is the arrival of Torch Swimmers and Saint Nicolas. Early in December (typically on the 6th of December) over 100 local divers swim across the Moselle river carrying lit torches, accompanying Saint Nicholas (the German version of Santa Claus) to the shore.

15. Ravensburg – Christmas in the City of Towers and Gates
You guessed it – this is another one of my favourite fairytale towns in Germany. I visited during Christmas time in 2025 and absolutely fell in love with this underrated city.
Not only is the architecture and old town there stunning, but I also absolutely loved their Christmas market.
The underrated Christmas market in Ravensburg is split across two main squares full of stalls with regional treats and handcrafted goods that make perfect Christmas gifts for your loved ones!
