Morocco should be on everyone’s travel bucket list.
It’s such a diverse country full of stunning landscapes, interesting history and culture.
Coastline, mountains, beautiful towns & cities, desert – Morocco has it all.
While places like Marrakesh and the Sahara Desert are already on the radar of most people, there’s many hidden gems waiting to be discovered here.
I personally did two roadtrips in Morocco so far (with pretty much the same itinerary, just almost 10 years apart) and had the best time. I am planning to take my camper down there next winter and explore more of the country that way.
Some of my favourite places in Morocco are: Marrakesh (yes, it’s worth the hype), Imlil (for the mountains) and Merzouga (for the desert).
General Information & Good To Know before visiting Morocco
Language:
Morocco has two official languages: Arabic and Tamazight (Berber). French is also widely spoked throughout the country. English mostly by the younger generation. I had quite a few instances where I wasn’t really able to communicate with someone, but Google Translate always does the trick.
Currency:
Moroccan Dirham, 1 Euro equals about 11 MAD and 1 USD about 9 MAD
Weather:
Morocco has great weather year round. For my personal taste a bit too hot in the summer, I prefer spring or autumn for the best temperatures. There’s also mountainous regions in Morocco, where weather is quite different to the coastal regions.
Safety:
I felt safe throughout both of my Morocco trips as a solo female traveler. That said, it’s a country with a relatively high petty crime rate, so you should always be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut. On bazars and in big cities, local vendors and tour guides etc. might hassle you, usually a firm “NO” should do the trick. Especially on Marrakesh’s famous Jema el-Fnaa square I found it quite intense in the evening, but never unsafe.
